I have been involved with llamas since the late 80's. Room for rent on a Virginia llama farm, while working as veterinarian technician nights. I found my self spending all my free time learning about llamas. I then started by volunteering time teaching llamas 101 and spinning to the local llama 4H group. At which time a part time position was created for me as husbandry assistant. In 1992, I teamed up with Ty Harris to manage a llama breeding farm, which took us across the county. This is where my veterinarian technician training came in, breeding & birthing 30 llamas a year and touring the west cost sale circuit. In 1996 we returned to Virginia to work for Kathy and Larry Hough, owners of Stuart Mill Farms located in northern Virginia, as assistant farm manager and Ty Harris as farm manager. We support two farm estates, duties which include the grounds, equipment maintenance, crops, sales and all aspects of the business and farming. The present herd averages about 30 llamas. The small select breeding herd enables us to provide daily hands-on and focus on herd health, training, showing and public education programs. Our job isn't complete as llama educators until the public stops asking "Did you purchase this llama from a zoo for the price of my house?" Knowledge is Power. My back ground and interests include Spinning and weaving llama fiber, breeding, training and showing Appaloosa horses and Horned Hereford cattle. Best of all is spending time and enjoying the comforting company of animals. As District 4 Representative provides the opportunity to share many years of hands on knowledge. Feel free to contact me by phone or e-mail with concerns or questions. Schedule a hands on llamas 101 class, or farm tour. Have you hugged a Llama today? |
